The Finger Lakes region of New York State is located in the beautiful and scenic central part of the state, north and west of New York City. Stunning aerial views show the Lakes face north to south and are long and slender like fingers, hence the name Finger Lakes. This upstate New York region was originally home to the powerful Iroquois Indian nation that was able to maintain their freedom from European colonization until after the Revolutionary War when they were sent to reservations and the land was sold and settled. Their mark remains today in the numerous names of the town, lakes and rivers.

My husband and I recently traveled to Aruba to celebrate our 10th anniversary. We chose Aruba because we wanted to go to the Caribbean but, traveling during hurricane season, we didn't want to worry about getting stuck in the path of a storm. The island sits just 15 miles north of Venezuela, south of the hurricane paths, and enjoys gorgeous weather year round. Of course, what we discovered is that Aruba offers far more than good geography.

Sightseeing war memorials and other sites of mass carnage are always moving experiences, but never more so than in a milestone anniversary year as 2009 is. This year marks the 65th anniversary of the invasion of Normandy on D-Day during World War II and the 90th anniversary of the end of World War I.
