Susan G. Komen for the Cure

Fulfilling its promise of providing hope, the Denver Metropolitan Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure has awarded $2.89 million to area not-for-profits from monies raised April 2007-March 2008.

On April 10, 2008, the Denver Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure awarded more than $2.89 million to 29 local not-for-profits providing breast health and breast cancer education, screening, treatment and support services to Colorado residents with little or no health insurance. In addition, Komen Denver invested nearly $1 million into breast cancer research through the Susan G. Komen for the CureÒ Grants Program for energizing science to find the cures at its annual Hope for the Cure celebration.

The monies were raised from April 2007 – March 2008 and were allocated into distinct categories including education and outreach (6%); screening including mammograms, clinical breast exams and diagnostic services (38%); treatment such as surgery, chemotherapy and radiation (40%); treatment support including meals, home health patient navigation and financial assistance (14%); and access to clinical trials (2%) for underserved breast cancer patients.

Since 1993, the Affiliate has invested more than $20 million into local breast health and breast cancer projects in 12 counties and another $7 million into breast cancer research. The organization relies heavily upon volunteers and support from the community. By raising money, volunteering and participating in events such as A Pink Tie Affair and the Komen Denver Race for the Cure, signature events of the Denver Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, supporters provide hope to thousands of uninsured and underinsured Coloradans.
